“How should you hold the motorcycle throttle?”
Whether you believe it or not. This question is always the topic of discussion among young motorcyclists. Everyone has a different technique and has different opinions. Plus, there is always a debate between motorcyclists, those who are in favor of four fingers and thumb around the throttle grip and those who are in favor of one or two fingers constantly resting on the brake lever in case of emergency.
However, some riders like me believe you should hold the throttle in the idling position of your hand with a relaxed grip. There is no benefit in holding with a strong grip and throttling around. On the contrary, it will cramp your hand.
So, why don’t we discuss both theories one by one and find out which should be suitable for motorcyclists?
Theory 1: Four Fingers Grip
According to some people and motorcyclists as well, we should hold the throttle with all four fingers and thumb by keeping the wrist straight. We were taught that this style will have a strong grip on the throttle and using all fingers to pull the brake lever will provide control.
This hold will provide a strong grip and you will have more power and control, which can help you to avoid accidental acceleration while braking.
But those who are against it raised the question, “Is it the best way to hold the throttle?”
Because if you use all fingers to hold the throttle then you may find it difficult to reach the fingers to grab the brake lever in case of emergency. So, if something happened in front of you, it might lead to panic braking.
So, now you understand the advantages and disadvantages of the four fingers grip.
In my opinion, the four fingers grip is suitable for beginner motorcyclists. Because in the beginning, you don’t want to panic and apply the brake for no reason. Plus, this is the best holding position for beginners who are learning to ride. This hold can give those riders a strong grip and control of the motorcycle handle.

Theory 2: Two-Finger Theory
The two-finger theory is followed by many professional racers so that they can downshift with the throttle and the brake. This matches engine speed and prevents dangerous rear-wheel lockup. But, to perform this technique and follow the two-finger hold, make sure your front brake lever can be activated by just one or two fingers and the brake has plenty of initial discs.
Plus, this hold can let you rest on long trips and you can avoid cramping problems. But if you are a beginner and learning how to ride a motorcycle, then you must stick to the basics and should follow the four fingers grip. And anyway, the two-finger technique will only be as powerful as your downshift technique. But if you haven’t practiced it, then you must learn the downshift technique first.
Or you can choose the technique that suits you or the circumstances. Just, make sure you put your thumb under the throttle, not on it.
