Tips for Riding a Motorcycle in Crosswinds
Examine the Direction
Whenever you leave your home to go for a ride, always check the wind direction. By looking at the trees, tall grass, and windmills, you can tell which way it is blowing. If all are pointing in one direction, then you can set up for a blustery ride. We mostly face high crosswinds in places like valleys, fields, mountaintops, and nearby water sources like rivers, etc.
Take Your Pick
If you have the option of choosing between a heavy cruising motorbike and a tall sports bike, then I would suggest you take the cruiser for riding in crosswinds. Heavy cruising bikes have a low center of gravity, which you need most in riding against high winds.
Also, check for a windscreen. If your bike has a windscreen, then you better not take it because windshields will push your motorcycle around in the wind.
Head or Tailwind
Whether it’s a headwind or tailwind, don’t let your guard down. Instead, get into a more leaning position and tuck your arms and legs in.
If you find yourself in a headwind, then you better drop down a gear and run smoothly in the wind. The smoother you ride, the more you have control over the handlebars.
But, if you are in a tailwind situation, then you might want to utilize a bit of rear brake.
One-sided Wind
A one-sided wind is very dangerous. That’s why I am going to share my special trick to overcome it. And I am telling you, it will work.
Next time, when you are riding in a crosswind and the wind is blowing from one side, just hang the corresponding knee out.
You must be wondering why?
Well, it is because when you put your knee out, then the wind will blow on your leg rather than your motorcycle. This means, no wind pressure on your motorcycle.
Posture
To have full control over a motorcycle, you don’t need to choke the handlebars to gain control over it. Instead, raise your elbows in a Motocross style and move slightly forward in the seat.
You are going to want to ride slowly in blustery conditions.
Safe Zone
Ride in the middle of the lane and look for protection from the crosswind, such as buildings and a line of trees. But, you will find the best protection in moving vehicles like cars and trucks. Just make sure when the protection goes away that you are very vigilant because the crosswind will blow you in the opposite direction.
I believe these hints and tricks will give you a better idea of how to ride safely in crosswinds. So, if you like these tips then please don’t forget to comment in the section below.
